Last summer and fall I was commissioned to do an illustration of a pretty girl for a local winery's Purgatory Red. The concept was that the girl would be stuck between heaven and hell—part innocent angel, part naughty demon.
I posted a couple of progress photos on my Facebook page as I was working on her, but in honor of the second label, which I'll be finishing up shortly, I thought I'd kick off the progress drawing-type posts with the flagship wine.
Please pardon the rough-looking images... I am lazy and hold them up to the computer's camera instead of putting my entire board (complete with wet paper) into the scanner.
And because I'm always cautious about the potential for revisions, I decided to render the sky separately and assemble everything in Photoshop. Perhaps the purists think of that as "cheating," but I didn't want to run the risk of having to paint the girl over again if the sky wasn't right—either in the client's opinion or in my own.
Here's the finished artwork, and the complete label:
Stay tuned for Part 2!

Welcome to the accountability area of my life, where I will be posting process sketches and other important stuff I let myself avoid when I'm "busy."
