Back to Basics
First order of business in getting back into drawing shape is getting my eyes and hands to agree on what they're doing. When I'm workshopping or goofing around with kids, there are always one or two who are frustrated with their practice and say "I can't draw a _________." For me in the wayback days, it was horses, and I invested hours as a kid copying them out of the ol' Walter Foster book and I got pretty good. So I tell these frustrated kids to do what I did: find a picture of ________ and copy it over and over again. It's good advice, and time for me to follow it. Regularly. First attempt is copying one of the classic Elvgren girls. It took a few attempts (and quite a bit of tantrum-like screeches) but I'm happy with how it turned out.
